Racing Dynamics releases new image of their F10 BMW 5 Series
Shortly after the new F10 BMW 5 Series was unveiled, the Aachen based and respectable tuner, Racing Dynamics, released a photoshop of their vision of the new 5er. Following up on that, a new front-end image made its way onto the web yesterday.
Racing Dynamics’ program for the F10 5er includes both visual and technical improvements. Firs step will consist of increasing the power of the already quite powerful 550i. Powered by the V8 twin-turbo engine, the 550i normally outputs 407 horsepower, but Racing Dynamics plans to take their 550i R50S model to an incredible 620 horsepower.
Along with the substantial power increase, a new rear-locking differential, sport suspension and high performance braking system is being offered as well.
The BMW 535i follows next, dubbed R35, the Racing Dynamics model also features the new N55 single-turbo twin-scroller engine, but with a substantial power increase: 410 horsepower, up from its 306 horsepower in standard form. The maximum torque is increased to a remarkable 530Nm (383.5 lb-ft) and the 0 to 62 mph is now achieved in 5.3 seconds, seven tenths faster than the the regular model.
To adjust the acoustics to the increased potency of R50S and R35, there is also a special exhaust system installed by Racing Dynamics that has been optimized with the help of expensive tests.
The extensively revised suspension system includes two gas struts for the front axle and a pair of gas-pressurized shock absorbers for the rear. In the development process, great importance was attached to obtain in addition to high driving dynamics and comfort at an acceptable balance. The complete system ensures that the sedan sits 35 millimeters closer to road.
In addition to the driving dynamics, a great emphasis was placed on improving the braking performance ??? understandable at a top speed of 340 km / h for the R50S. The brake system is designed to provide fading delay and high reliability even at red-hot brake discs and brake temperature of 800 degrees Celsius. Specific weight-slotted brake discs with four-or six-piston calipers are combined.
As seen in the photshoped image above, Racing Dynamics models make use of new lightweight 21??? one-piece forged wheels.
Further details are expected to be released near the April-May time frame when first 5 Series models will reach the BMW dealerships in Europe.
Wallpapers: F11 5 Series Touring next to the F10 5er Sedan
The moment we have all been waiting for: the new F11 BMW 5 Series Touring next to the F10 5 Series Sedan. Ever since its official unveiling this weekend, the new 2011 BMW 5 Series Touring captured the attention of many BMW fans. Some went as far as labeling the new Touring model as being “better looking” that its “step-brother”.
The F11 Touring completes the 5 Series family, sans the M5, and along with the F10 Sedan and F07 5 GT, cover a wide range of requirements from BMW customers. Many of you have already wondered why the need of a Touring model when the 5 Gran Turismo was just launched on the market, and that is a valid questions.
To respond to that question, we need to look one more time at the definition of a Gran Turismo vehicle: high-performance luxury automobile designed for long-distance driving. The emphasis here is “high-performance luxury”. The 5 GT was built and designed for a niche market, a new segment that focuses on interior space and luxury, while not neglecting the performance.
On the other hand, the 5 Series Touring remains a family car, a spacious automobile that is perfect for long trips and suitable for a large family. The photos below portray this perfectly.
5 Series Touring vs. 5 Series Sedan?
Well, it all comes down to a personal preference. While not as popular in the U.S., the BMW Tourings/Sport Wagons are an attractive buy in Europe, and combining the new design with the spacious interior, increased performance and reduced fuel consumption, we can see why some BMW consumers are inclined to opt for the Touring model.
Photo Comparison: F11 BMW 5 Series Touring, Audi A6 Avant and Mercedes E-Class Estate
The new 2011 F11 BMW 5 Series Touring was unveiled yesterday and as always, our first thought is to compare the car against its competitors. The 5er Touring has always been competing for the same segment with Audi’s A6 Avant and the E-Class Estate from Mercedes-Benz. Since comparison test drives have yet to be completed, we will focus today on the technical points and overall interior and exterior design.
The BMW offers with 2.97 meters, by far the longest wheelbase in its segment and, consequently, the shortest overhangs, which contributes much to its dynamic side view. All the competitors are within 7 centimeters in exterior length, with the new 5er Touring situated between the A6 Avant and the E-Class Estate.
With a luggage capacity of 560, respectively 565 liters, BMW 5 Series Touring and Audi A6 Avant are practically on a par; the Mercedes E-Class is in another league with its 695 liters. With the rear-seats folded down, the Audi A6 Avant offers 1,600 liters, short of the 1,670 liters from the 5 Touring and significantly less than the E-Class Estate, 1,950 liters.
The exterior design can be quite subjective and each one of the above listed cars have their own strengths and fans, so we will refrain at this time from drawing a conclusion.
But let’s focus on the technical points where numbers don’t lie. All three sport wagons come equippied with four cylinder diesel engines. While the Ingolstadt and Stuttgart based automakers offer 136 hp from its entry-level diesel offerings, BMW responds with a 184 horsepower from its 520d model.
The 136 horsepower Audi A6 2.0 TDIe consumes 5.3 liters of diesel, this comes down to 25.7 hp per liter fuel consumption. The 136 hp Mercedes E 200 CDI BlueEfficiency has fuel consumption per 100km of 5.8 to 6.0 liters, thus exceeding 23.4 hp per liter.
On a different note, we feel more comfortable placing the BMW 520d Touring against the Mercedes E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and the Audi A6 2.0 TDI with 170 hp. Both automakers provide for these models a fuel consumption of 5.8 liters per 100 kilometers, around 0.8 liters or 16 percent higher than the 5.0 liters recorded by the 520d Touring which also has a power increase of 14 hp.
2011 BMW 520d Touring runs from 0 to 100km/h in 8.3 seconds. E220 CDI reaches the same speed in 9.2 seconds, slightly faster than the A6 2.0 TDI Avant at 9.3 seconds.
Even with the larger six cylinder diesel engines outputting 240 horsepower, the BMW offers the best fuel consumption.
The entry-level petrol model, BMW?? 523i outputs 200 horsepower and records a fuel consumption number of only 7.9 liters/100km, slightly ahead of the almost equally powerful Mercedes E250 CGI and its 8.0 liters/100km. The distinction between the two models comes at the number of cylinders they offer, B MW uses a six-cylinder engine, while Mercedes responds with a four-cylinder powerplant.
Audi jumps in with the A6 2.8 FSI, a V6 model and front-wheel drive. It comes with 190 hp and an average fuel consumption of 8.3 liters. Replacing the FWD with the Quattro system, adds another 0.4 liter/100km to the fuel consumption value.
If you want even more power, the choices continue to be impressive: BMW 535i Touring, Audi A6 3.0 TFSI or the Mercedes E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY. The BMW and its turbocharged six-cylinder 3.0 liter engine makes 306 hp, while the competitors are each just over 290 hp mark.
The two rear-wheel drive models from Munich and Stuttgart are with about 8.5 liters in the standard consumption, ahead of the Allroads from Ingolstadt, suffering from the higher friction losses in its drivetrain, and lands at an average fuel consumption of 9.5 liters.
With the new 2011 BMW 5 Series Touring, BMW confirms one more time its position as a pioneer in the fuel efficiency field. For those consumers looking for more cabin and storage space, Mercedes-Benz has well positioned their E-Class Estate models. If you value the all-wheel drive system, Audi currently offers it in their A6 Avant models.
In a few months, BMW’s xDrive system will come to market as well.
No pricing has been revealed for the new F11 5 Series Touring, so we will hold off the value comparison until we have some hardcoded numbers.

Leaked Photos: 2011 F11 BMW 5 Series Touring
Ahead of its scheduled release, the 2011 BMW 5 Series Touring breaks cover. The leaked photos showed up this morning on the German magazine Bild.de and reveal one of the best looking Touring/Wagons ever built by BMW.
The new BMW 5er Touring will be revealed to the public for the first time when the Auto Mobil International (AMI) Show opens on the Leipzig Fairgrounds 10 ??? 18 April 2010.
As seen in these official photos, the new 5 Series Touring has grown in size and the rear-end sports a more coupeish-like roof. 5 Series Touring is considerably lower and sleeker than the 5 Gran Turismo model, but without sacrificing that sportiness much needed by the BMW buyers. Inside, the 5er Touring features a three-part rear seat which is folded by hand.
Engine wise, the F11 Touring will come in two flavors of six-cylinder petrol engines, 523i with 204 horsepower and the 535i, 306 hp. Four and six-cylinder diesel powerplants are offered as well, including the 520d with 184 hp and 525d with 245 hp. The diesel engine in the 520d offers one of the best fuel consumption numbers in a Touring model: 5.2 liters per 100 km or 45.2 MPG. As part of EfficientDynamics, the 520d includes the Start-Stop technology.
The top model with six-cylinder, 535i, sprints from 0 to 62 mph in just six seconds and consumes on average 8.6 liter/100km (27.35 MPG). Optional, the 2011 BMW 5 Series Touring can be ordered with the new ZF 8-speed automatic transmission.
The fourth generation F11 5er Touring starts in Europe from 42,600 euros and will become available at German dealerships on September 18th, 2010. Still no word on availability for the U.S. market, but we’ll keep our hopes.
BMW to build X1 SAV in China
At the 2010 Geneva Auto Show, BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer revealed that the entry-level SAV X1 would be the third BMW model to be made at the company’s China venture. BMW and Chinese partner Brilliance Auto already have an agreement on building the BMW 1 Series and a stretched BMW 3 Series. It is unclear if the stretched 3 Series will be the past rumored 3 Gran Turismo or simply a long wheelbase of one of the current models.
Earlier this year, BMW Brilliance stopped manufacturing the BMW 3 Series cars to expand the venture’s capacity and began importing the BMW sedans in large quantities to pick up the sales. The new factory will be coming back on stream soon for a new range of models.
In the highly competitive Chinese market, BMW’s X1 will compete against the Audi Q5 and also its “step-brother”, the VW Tiguan. All three models are expected to go head-to-head for the premium compact SUV/SAV segment.
BMW 3 Series and 5 Series sedans have been manufactured at the venture based in the northeastern Chinese city of Shenyang.
According to a report by Chinese automotive magazine Gasgoo, the stretched BMW 3 Series sedan will be launched in August to take on the Audi A4.
Before we let these speculations run wild, we would like to mention that no new information on the 3 GT have come our way.

Video: i-Motor reviews the BMW 5 Series GT
The UK journalists are i-Motor spent some time behind the wheel of the somewhat controversial BMW 5 Series GT. One of those cars that don’t photograph well, but tend to stand out when seen in person, the 5 GT is being said to have already exceeded BMW’s sales expectations.
Launched last year, the BMW 5 Series GT, short for Gran Turismo, is based on the platform of the new BMW 7 Series and was built on the same principle that made the original Gran Turismo vehicles so popular: a high-performance luxury automobile designed for long-distance driving and why not, having some fun while at it.
???Is it an SUV? A Wagon?” Same very questions many of us have asked, but truth is that the 5 GT opens a new niche market that is slowly starting to welcome new players from BMW’s competition.
The first car to be built by BMW from inside-out, the 5 GT is not only an imposing and unique vehicle – okay..some may say odd -but also sets new standards of interior design luxury in the BMW line-up.
Let’s have a look at i-Motor’s review.
Video: New BMW 5 Series at 2010 Geneva Motor Show
